Race day sure bet for family entertainment

By Patrick O' Sullivan

Today at the races looks to be an entertaining day out for all the family, plus there's some horse racing.

Whether you base yourself at a picnic, marquee or bar you will easily find entertainment at the Interislander Summer Festival Hawke's Bay Races in Hastings.

With a general admission charge of $10 it is good value for money. Included are a free sausage sizzle, free sunscreen and a package of entertainment at the Kids Go Racing area. Activities include horse-shoe toss, races, lolly scramble, bouncy slide, face painting, design the silks competition, guess the lollies in the jar, pin the tail on the horse, giant jumps and slides, sugar cube relay, scavenger hunt, slip-slop-slap dash, lolly scramble and a free goody bag.

Between races, kids will find themselves the centre of attention with hopper and sack races down the home straight, as well as New Zealand Mounted Games performances.

Hawke's Bay Racing general manager Jason Fleming said the first race was at a "leisurely" 12.34pm and the Russell Roads City Of Hastings Cup would be the feature race of the day, "with a few visitors from up north" entered.

He said Irish-bred Kaptain Kirkup would probably be favourite but local trainer Corrina McDougal was in with a chance with Outback Girl.

Picking winners was something that could be delegated from just $10 through the Punters Club, with experts choosing your bet on your behalf.

Mr Fleming said it was a good day out for all ages.

"A day at the races is a great opportunity to catch up with friends and family with good fun action," he said.

"You can bring along the last bit of ham from the fridge, a chilly bin and enjoy a bit of a picnic in the sunshine."

Infield parking is accessed off Southland Rd.
