Havelock North's Hawthorne Coffee won top honours at the annual Huhtamaki New Zealand Coffee Awards, announced in Auckland on Wednesday.
The roastery and cafe tied for gold in the decaffeinated category and took bronze in the Best Supermarket Espresso section.
"It's a great achievement for us. Every year these awards roll around and every year we have been up there and in there with the best of them," Hawthorne Coffee owner/manager Tom Ormond said.
"One thing we are really excited about is how many we have won, it's up to 19 medals, that's more than anyone else in the country and shows our consistency."
Mr Ormond wasn't going to enter Hawthorne's decaffeinated coffee, but was happy he changed his mind.
"We have only entered it once before and we got a silver for it," he said.
"I was thinking of not entering this year but I did. It's probably the least popular but it's still nice for people who drink decaf to have a really nice one."
Their achievement in the espresso category meant a lot as they strove to do well in making good quality every-day coffee.
The awards aimed to increase public awareness about the exceptional quality and value of New Zealand coffee and were judged by a panel of experts during a series of blind tests.
In all, there were eight categories to choose from: Best Espresso, Best Flat White, Best Ethically Traded, Best Organic, Best Supermarket Plunger, Best Supermarket Espresso, Best Decaffeinated and Best Foodservice Plunger.
Christchurch roasters Vivace Espresso won the overall competition, taking out the Huhtamaki NZ Supreme Coffee Award ahead of 270 coffees entered by 65 companies.
