$190m boost may have sting in tail

The New Zealand Transport Agency's announcement that it will spend $190 million on Hawke's Bay roads and major transport projects has been welcomed but may come at the loss of funding for local road maintenance.

Hastings District Council chief executive Ross McLeod said the council was delighted to see agency funding applied to key strategic projects including the Whakatu arterial road and the highly successful iWay walking and cycling project.

"We are keen to talk further with the NZTA about how its funding allocations for maintenance and renewal of roads and bridges around the district will affect the condition and durability of these assets in the medium to long term," Mr McLeod said.
