Teenagers are usually better at spending money than raising it, but the Hastings Youth Council is challenging the stereotype.
The group, ranging in age from 15-20, is involved in helping to raise the estimated $300,000 needed for the completion of the Hastings skate park, an idea which they pitched to the council five years ago.
Youth council member, 17-year-old Brendon Dockary, is part of the sub-committee of six who meet fortnightly to focus on raising money .
They are currently working on a range of fundraising initiatives which include mufti days around Hastings high schools, sausage sizzles in local primary schools and the Hastings Street Jam competition on September 30.
Mr Dockary said they were also "tossing up" between organising a concert at the Hawke's Bay Opera House or a quiz night.
The young people are hoping the skate park, located on the corner of King St and St Aubyn St, will be completed before the end of the summer holidays.
"Everyone can't wait for it," Mr Dockary said.
The youth council anticipates the Hastings community will get behind their fundraising efforts.
"It is right in their backyard. They are going to get direct results from our efforts, so the community is pretty keen to get behind it," he said.
Hastings District councillor Sandra Hazlehurst said the youth council had shown initiative with the skate park project.
"They certainly have got some really good ideas," she said.
"They are an awesome group of young people. They understand quite clearly how the city is run and they bring a youth perspective to the councillors.
"As a council we are trying to be more inclusive of the youth council in everything that we do," she said.
The youth council had recently been involved in reviewing the council facilities.
"They will be giving a verbal report on how they see the council assets running. So they really are a valuable resource as they provide a youth perspective," she said.
