Busy period for deco fans

By AMY SHANKS

Deco devotees were utterly exhausted after three days attending glamorous get-togethers and themed events across Napier at the weekend.

``I think a few people wore themselves out,'' Art Deco Trust Events manager Peter Mooney said.

``We had a new system where you buy one ticket for everything. I suspect some people wanted to get the absolute most out of it and were dragging their feet around the last events on Sunday.''

DIY Art Deco Weekend was founded last year by Lee-Anne Freeman aka Lady Penelope Partington Ffyes and John (Bertie) Cocking, after the Art Deco Trust opted to move its Deco Decanted and Jazz Festival weekend to coincide with Rugby World Cup matches in Hawke's Bay.

``There were a group of people who said they were really going to miss the mid-winter get-together, so Lee-Anne and Bertie came up with DIY Art Deco.''

For the second year the pair left all organisation and marketing to The Art Deco Trust, which aimed to keep a close knit atmosphere while offering more variety.

``It is not just a boiled-down version of the February event, it's completely different. Our intention is to grow it steadily, to make sure the roots are firmly planted. We are conscious of not losing the piece in the middle, that cosy, compact thing.''-->
