If you have quite a few million to spare, Craggy Range Road is the place for you.
Of the three million-dollar-plus houses for sale on the road, the most impressive is Matarangi, belonging to John and Ros Stace.
At $5.25 million, their subdividable 67 ha property is priced above the council valuation of $3.85 million, but with their two north-facing houses, heated pool, tennis court and stables, a more stunning vista could not be found. The 711 sq m main house offers 270-degree views of the Tukituki Valley and, opposite, Te Mata Peak mountain range.
The main house and adjoining 119 sq m guest house were designed by architect Charlie Nott, who was given a brief by owners John and Ros Stace to design to the highest specifications. The home has five bedrooms and five bathrooms.
Mr Stace said they loved the house but it was time to be "pragmatic" and downsize.
"We are probably, you might say, over housed," he said.
"Sooner or later when you get to a ripe old age common sense has to start to prevail.
"This is a big house for two of us. Our children and grandchildren are overseas - there is just the two of us here and we have decided to move into something smaller.
"We love it here, it's gorgeous. We are blessed with wall to wall sunshine, remarkable views of Te Mata Peak and we own the last piece of the real Craggy Range which does not have pine trees on it. It is a lovely property and we will be reluctant to let it go.
Originally from Wellington, Mr Stace spent 25 years in Great Britain where he became deputy chairman of Lloyds.
He decided to return to New Zealand with his Irish wife Ros, choosing Hawke's Bay, where his mother was originally from.
He is now semi retired, holding "a few" directorships and doing volunteer work.
He said he they had no plans to leave the region.
"We will stay in Hawke's Bay but we will miss our lovely home.
"We will find a lovely smaller house which we will not feel so guilty about when we are not here."
Also for sale on Craggy Range Rd is Farside, a 70 ha property with a council valuation of $1.6 million.
Built in the 1990s, Farside is a traditional homestead design.
The five bedroom home has three bathrooms, extensive views, a pool and self-contained sleepout.
At 233 Craggy Range Rd, $1.4 million will buy you a 281 sq m home on 2.5 ha with views to Te Mata Peak, a pool, spa and tennis court.Craggy Range Rd is a 10 minute drive from Havelock North, off Tuki Tuki Rd near Waimarama Rd.
