Joyride comes to abrupt end

A group of joy-riders who cut the lock on a gate and "hooned" around Te Mata Peak ended up crashing their car down a bank and may face police charges.

Hastings Police Senior Sergeant Luke Shadbolt said the group broke into the area by cutting the lock on a gate.

"They were hooning around up there and left the road," he said.

On Saturday morning, police and vehicle towers were present at the site (pictured).

Mr Shadbolt said charges might follow but further details were unavailable last night.

It was believed no one was injured.
