A Hawke's Bay mother accused of driving at nearly double the breath-alcohol limit while taking her three children to rugby on Saturday had backed up the boozy night by stopping at a friend's house for a drink that morning.
The 35-year-old was stopped on Hartgill Cres, central Dannevirke, at about 8.50am on Saturday, after police noticed her erratic driving.
She had 774mcg of alcohol per litre of breath - almost twice the legal limit of 400mcg of alcohol per litre of breath, said Dannevirke Sergeant Tony Le Sueur.
"That's a high level for 9 o'clock in the morning," he said. "She was drinking reasonably heavily the night before and it's believed she had another drink in the morning when she went to visit a friend."
Her three primary school-aged children were looked after in the staff room while their mother was processed for drink driving.
The woman is due to appear in the Dannevirke District Court on June 13.
