Napier Civil Defence has embarked on a recruiting drive for volunteers as it embarks on setting up a new communications and IT response team.
The team will operate Civil Defence's recently acquired communications trailer - although volunteers from the one-off intake this year were being sought for duties across the board.
Napier Civil Defence manager Angela Reade said volunteers played a vital role within the community at times of emergency, and as well as being a part of that role were able to pick up skills they could take into their workplace.
She said the volunteers currently specialised in welfare response, which included managing welfare centres and co-ordinating accommodation needs when required. The introduction of the new communications and IT team was a further area for volunteers to aim at.
"This team is responsible for the deployment of the satellite communications trailer and the set up of telephone, radio and internet solutions." Anyone interested is asked to contact Napier Civil Defence on 835 7579 for an information pack or see www.napier.govt.nz. Applications close on June 5.
