Happy campers: Clifton a special place

An array of beaches and holiday parks has long made Hawke's Bay a popular destination for summer-time campers. Reporter Morgan Tait gets out and about and talks to those embracing the great Kiwi tradition.

The Thomas family of Hastings have been camping at Clifton for generations, and call it their second home.

How long have you been coming to Clifton for?

Forty years.

How long are you staying for?

The site is here from Labour Weekend to Easter every year.

Why Clifton?

I have been coming here since I was a kid, so tradition but also it is very family-friendly and a great way to get all the kids together.

Favourite things to do here?

We fish here mainly, but also relax and play a lot of board games.

Most memorable trip?

The biggest memory is that all that up the front used to actually be there - there was about 30m of frontage that has now fallen off into the sea.

We used to camp up the front so we lost our place and got moved back here.

Tips for other campers?

Sand shoes because it is really stoney, so wear them when you swim.
