DOC Natural History, Heritage Conservation Award

WINNER

Simon Hall - nominated for his work in establishing Forest Life Force Restoration Trust, which oversees ecological work on his two native forest and one forestry property. And for his personal commitment to kiwi restoration, ecological work, and funding of kaka beak plant restoration, mistletoe surveys and whio (blue duck) surveys.

HIGHLY COMMENDED

Te Mahia School - numerous excellent projects by students at this Enviroschool including beach and stream clean ups, planting for stream enhancement and wetland protection, plus involved in publicising environmental concerns.

OTHER NOMINATIONS

Colin James - creation from bare earth of Friends Bush in Jervois Rd, which is now a mature and unique patch of bush within Napier City boundaries and visited by 4000 people annually.

Hastings District Heritage Trails - nominated for their development of the Havelock North Architectural Heritage Drive, focused on outstanding architecture from many eras in the area.

Guthrie Smith Trust - ongoing arboretum development, restoration of homestead, planting for erosion control and contribution to outdoor/environmental education.

Sus'd Programme Excellence Award

WINNER

Curtain Bank - providing 1307 curtains to keep Hawke's Bay homes warmer, promote positive health and reduce waste. Supported by Energy Options which provides a workshop base and support.

OTHER NOMINATIONS

Camberley Kindergarten - sustainable practices and learning about rubbish, energy and waste for children to learn about caring for their home and environment.

Local Environment Action Fund (LEAF) Project Excellence Award

WINNER

Camberley Kindergarten - successful and imaginative development of a vegetable and fruit garden to benefit the health and knowledge of children and their families, demonstrating sustainable practices such as composting and worm farms.

DOC Catherine Tiffen Volunteer Award

WINNER

Teresa Hurst - Forest and Bird volunteer with a high level of commitment to many projects, especially Blowhard Bush.

Community Environment Award

WINNER

Cape Sanctuary - substantial fencing, four years of planting native trees, pest control, bird recovery, tangata whenua links, over 600 community volunteers involved.

OTHER NOMINATIONS

Hawke's Bay Southern Motorway Extension - environmental work done around the southern motorway extension at Maraekakaho planned by OPUS and NZTA plus installation of Orchiston flax collection by HDC and HBRC.

Karituwhenua Stream - further development on stream side planting and maintenance by local residents group.

Karamu Enhancement Group - streamside enhancement of Karamu, assisting council and assisting with planning and weeding by volunteers.

Meeanee Interchange - roadside and amenity planting by OPUS and NZTA with NCC for air quality improvement, noise pollution mitigation, and improved traffic flow.

Esk Hills Residents Society - residents funding and development of reserves around residential development north of Napier

Nick and Lois Riddell, East Argyll - planting and development of wetland area on farm over some year, now in QEII Trust and well established.

Stock Effluent Project - design and construction of a stock effluent facility at Glengarry by OPUS and NZTA with council input, plus amenity planting.

Ahuriri Protection Society - for protection of the Ahuriri Estuary and wildlife areas including planting, clean ups, bird protection and lobbying.

Outstanding Contribution to the Environment Award

WINNER

Kepa Toa - commitment to planting and caring for Maraetotara River riparian area, involvement in Cape Sanctuary, teaching and encouraging youth in environment protection and development of Rongoa Maori medicine.

HIGHLY COMMENDED

John Cheyne - for his years of contribution through DOC, Fish and Game and other work for ecological protection and recovery.

OTHER NOMINATIONS

Brett Gilmore - for work within forestry industry to protect and enhance environment, plus personal involvement in bush and species protection.

Tom Hartree - for a lifetime contribution to the environment in Hawke's Bay through his personal farm property, kiwi protection and QE II Trust work.
