$5.5m revamp for pools

Four Hastings pools are in for a $5.5 million makeover, the Hastings District Council announced yesterday.
The makeovers were part of a new aquatic strategy to revamp the Frimley Aquatic Centre, Clive War Memorial Pool, Flaxmere Waterworld and Havelock North Village Pool.
Hastings district councillor Ru Collin said the upgrades would ensure the pools meet demanding safety standards in years to come and should encourage more public use of the facilities.
"Council will work with the trusts which manage the pools, to find ways of balancing the needs of all pool users.
He said if the refurbished pools still were not making the public happy a new pool could be added.
"If we are still unable to meet the demand from the community, council will undertake a feasibility study, into whether a new district pool should be provided."
He said the upgrades have been in the pipeline since 2009, when a rigorous study found all four pools wanting and struggling to meet modern compliance standards.
Work on the Frimley and Clive pools was expected to begin next year and be completed in 2013, with the major part of the Flaxmere Waterworld project taking place in 2012 and 2013, plus additional work in 2016.
The Havelock North pool would also be done in 2012 and 2013, with the final phase to be undertaken in 2018.
Mr Collins said most of the submissions were supportive of the project.
