A former Hastings jockey befriended a woman then systematically rape and abused her teenage daughter, Napier District Court was told today.
David John Frethey, 55, has pleaded not guilty to nine charges of rape and sexual assault against the girl, and another eight charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Crown prosecutor Steve Manning told a jury of five women and seven men that Frethey befriended the girl's mother and inveigled his way into their home where he became increasingly brazen and violent in his sexual abuse of the girl, sometimes while her mother was in another room in the house.
He first raped and beat the girl when she was 12 or 13 and kept her silent with threats of violence, Mr Manning said.
The mother finally realised what was going on when Frethey took the girl to a party, promising to return her home that evening.
However, he did not bring her home until later the next day, by which time the mother had called police.
The girl was to give evidence to the court this afternoon, the first in a long list of witnesses including some of her friends who will tell the court about Frethey's sexual behaviour with the girl in front of them, Mr Manning said.
The trial is expected to last for the rest of this week.
