Pit bull mauls 3-year-old girl

A 3-year-old girl suffered serious face and eye injuries after being mauled by a pit bull in Wairoa on Sunday.
Sergeant Matt King said the girl and her family were visiting a friend in Wairoa about 4pm when she went into the backyard and was attacked by the dog.
The child was taken to Wairoa Hospital before being airlifted to Hawke's Bay Hospital by the Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter.
Mr King said the girl received about 20 stitches to the face and was "lucky" not to have lost an eye in the attack.
The dog was destroyed and police inquiries into the matter are continuing.
The girl is in a stable, comfortable condition in the children's ward.
The attack was the second in the country on Sunday after a 5-year-old girl was mauled by a pit bull and a staffordshire bull terrier in the eastern Bay of Plenty.
