When the words 'Art Deco' were read out twice at the prestigious NZ Association of Event Professionals annual conference earlier this week, the Art Deco Trust's event manager Peter Mooney thought one thing.
"Cool," was what immediately went through his mind, he said with a satisfied smile yesterday.
"Yeah, I thought it was pretty cool."
It was a relaxed response which reflected the way Mr Mooney and his colleagues approached the awards event - the first time the Brebner Print Art Deco Weekend event had been entered.
But organising such a major event had never exactly been relaxing, Mr Mooney confessed, although the results and the "magic" it achieved made all the long hours and hard work satisfying.
The Art Deco Trust picked up the 'Best Established Event' award as well as the 'Best partnership in an Event' (with Brebner Print) award.
"To have our event highlighted in this way in front of event managers from many of the major events held in New Zealand each year is quite an achievement and it is a huge compliment to the committee, the volunteers and the sponsors who make the Art Deco Weekend happen," Mr Mooney said.
He believed it was the unique magic of the whole event which swayed the judges over several other major events staged throughout the country.
Brebner Print director Neville Smith said the partnership award was very satisfying as the event had benefited both the company and the city.
Mr Mooney said there could be more accolades to come as the Art Deco Trust had entered the event into three more national award events being staged before the end of the year.
