Hawke's Bay is almost booked out as the region gears up for one of its busiest weekends of the year.
While the Hawke's Bay Show will be the major attraction today and tomorrow, there are plenty of other sporting and cultural events to cater for the tastes of visitors.
Hastings Moteliers' Association secretary Noeline Sievers said traditionally finding accommodation in Napier and Hastings over Labour Weekend was difficult.
She said most Hastings and Napier motels were heavily booked on Saturday and Sunday though there may be limited accommodation available on Friday and Monday. The major sports events of the weekend include the New Zealand Off Road four-wheel drive championships in Gwavas Forest on Saturday and a rally at the Lagoon Farm, Tamatea, track on Sunday.
Scores of women will take part in a softball tournament at Akina Park, Hastings, and the New Zealand women's open snooker championships is being played at the National Services Club, Hastings.
Thirty-four teams will take part in Napier City Rovers' under 19 soccer tournament at Park Island, Napier, over the weekend.
The tournament requires 120 games.
Hawke's Bay cricketers will take part in club competitions tomorrow instead of the customary Saturday.
Josie Walker will star in the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice production of Evita in Napier's Municipal Theatre.
Other events include The Early American Car Club display on Napier's Marine Parade, a Wedding Expo at Ormlie Lodge, Taradale, a Gypsy Fair in Napier and exhibitions of pottery and quilting.
Many of the region's wineries also have special events planned.
