Life skills with St John

S

t John Youth programme focuses on first aid, healthcare, leadership and general life skills. Cadets are the largest group within St John Youth. Since the programme is for all young people aged 8 to 18, cadets are grouped into various levels for training, competitions, events, camps and even social activities. We also have many mixed activities for senior cadets to take the lead and provide role models for junior cadets to aspire to. Cadets enter levels based on their age and unique needs. Cadets meet once a week during the school term at their local division. Every division has a unique programme to suit your needs and interests, so there is a lot of variety. In Hawke’s Bay we have 2 Youth divisions in Napier, 1 in Hastings and 1 in Waipukurau. Outside the exciting activities that happen in a division, there are heaps of other activities throughout the year for cadets

to meet new people, learn new things and have loads of fun. St John Youth offers many different opportunities for young people to challenge themselves. The only limit to what you can achieve is how far you are willing to go. Outside your weekly divisional meetings, there is an assortment of possibilities for all ages. • Overnight stays and camps • Courses and training workshops • Fun days and social functions • Competitions and first aid scenarios • Adventure activities • Drill and formal ceremonies • Operational events alongside St John Events personnel • Travel opportunities The St John Penguin Programme is for young people aged 6 to 8 years and is all about having fun, discovering new things, building confidence and working together.

Penguins also meet once a week during the school term. Meetings can include things such as games, badge work, drill and sometimes special themed nights. Activities can include

visits, fun days, competitions and camps. In Hawke’s Bay we have 1 Penguin Programme in Napier. Find out more about St John Youth by visiting our website youth.stjohn.org.nz

A

s with many things in life the advice is to keep it simple and be gentle on your skin. The body undergoes many changes during puberty thanks to raging hormones. First and foremost, and this advice applies to all people: eat a heathy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, exercise, drink plenty of water, get sufficient sleep and don’t take drugs or excess alcohol. Skin should be kept clean and for girls a light cleanse, tone and moisturise should be all that’s necessary. Make up should be removed before going to bed and avoid touching your face. Try not to put your face on objects that may collect grease like phones. Before applying make-up or skin treatments always wash your hands. Overall the best thing to protect your skin long term is using sun screen to prevent UVA and UVB rays from damaging your skin. Your skin can be damaged even if the sun isn’t shining and we all know that too much sun can lead to skin cancer. Apply sun screen with an SPF of at least 15 and re-apply frequently if swimming, exercising or are exposed to reflective surfaces such as snow. Protect your face and eyes with a hat and sunglasses that

provide 100% UV protection. Look for sunscreen that contains both zinc oxide and titanium oxide. Greasy skin can be a concern with many teens which leads to blackheads, whiteheads or even acne. Acne is caused by overactive oil glands and a build-up of oil, dead skin cells and bacteria which lead to inflammation of pores. Don’t pop or squeeze pimples. It is very tempting – but can make things worse by pushing infected material and pus further into the skin. Always wash after exercise, use clean towels and be careful what touches your face. Look for skin products that do not clog pores. Teens with acne should wash their face twice a day with warm water and a mild soap made specifically for people with acne. For those who are prone to acne on their body try to wear loose fitting clothes.

Get lost in a book A bookstore is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking.

S

witch your phone off for a while and learn what a pleasure it can be to read a real book. Yes, reading for pleasure can be fun and it’s very relaxing. Reading also has a number of other benefits such as giving your brain a workout, expanding your vocabulary, being able to appreciate different writing styles and take on board new ideas. You may also find that your powers of concentration improve and your view of the world may take on a wider perspective. There’s a whole world waiting to be discovered in the pages of a book. There can be few pleasures greater than becoming fully engrossed in a novel. Get lost and disconnect from real life with fiction. For those who prefer modern technology there are ebooks and apps available for reading on the go.

School leavers attracted by hands on course in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 3) for free. On top of practical experience, they spend a day in the classroom each week, which includes lessons in early brain development, attachment theory, care routines, and hearing from the local Plunket Nurse. PORSE General Manager of Education & Training, Erin Maloney says that the programme is a winwin for both the training families and nanny interns involved. “Families benefit from having a nanny in their own home for a minimal cost while nannies also benefit from the practical, real-life experience that the placement offers them. They get the on-thejob training to fit alongside the theory that they are learning about – it makes it real for them.” “The nannying role is on the rise, with more and more families looking to nannies to support their busy lifestyles - especially as mothers return to the workplace. The Nanny Intern Programme offers a great transition into this space for families who are looking for

affordable and accessible support,” Ms Maloney said. “The Nanny Intern Programme has been a life changing experience for me and I urge

anyone thinking about a career in childcare to enrol. It’s an amazing hands on experience where you know you’re making a difference to the child’s life,” Ms Aitchison says.

career in childcare is becoming a popular choice for school leavers who are being attracted by practical, hands on courses. Samantha-Jo Aitchison had two careers in mind – joining the New Zealand Air Force or working with children. After completing NZQA Level 2, the Blenheim school leaver applied for the PORSE nanny intern course in Hawke’s Bay. The PORSE Nanny Intern Programme is a 21-week training course, which offers a mix of practical and theorybased learning. Ms Aitchison feels particularly “lucky” to be part of a loving environment, caring for sevenmonth-old Parker and brother Cooper, three-and-a-half. Mum Toni McGregor says having a nanny at home is hugely beneficial when you have demanding work hours. As owner of floral and wedding stylist business, the summer season is particularly hectic. The course allows interns to work through a National Certificate

101 reasons why you should learn Taekwondo By Master Camille Pruckmuller

“If it was easy everyone would do it.”

T

aekwondo (TKD) is an ancient Korean martial art for selfdefence. Style has changed over the years as it has been adapted for sport and it has also been adapted as an Olympic sport. Masters came to New Zealand about 30 years ago to teach and start up Dojangs, or hall of training. It doesn’t matter what style you do as all TKD is a great way to learn a Martial Art. I started with ITF (International Taekwondo Federation) when I was 23, a single mum and looking for a new start in life I saw advertised in the paper a self-defence class for ladies, I went along and the rest is history. Eventually I set up classes in my garage and when numbers got too large we moved to Mahora School. Bay City TKD Club was incorporated into the Hastings club. We now have over 80 students who train with a number of instructors over 5-6 days of the

week 3-4 times a day. The club has grown from a social, amateur club to an academy style of club, with three local branches Hastings, Taradale and Havelock North, one in Vanuatu and another in the Solomon Islands. We are a sister club to Se Jong in Auckland, Hamilton and Invercargill. You can find us training at 206 Queen Street, Hastings opposite Kiwi Bank. The First week is free to try for all ages from 4 upwards, for anybody shape, age, size and gender. Your fitness level doesn’t matter as a complete programme is made to suit you! There is a family discount but otherwise it works out around $5.00 per hour to train. Personally I feel everyone that does TKD or Karate and completes their Black Belt become better people for doing it, as I always say to my students “if it was easy everybody would do it,” but it’s not easy and

takes years of dedication from all sides, instructor’s, students, parents and caregivers. Most parents become glorified taxi drivers for about five years. I recommend that a child should start before intermediate school age. TKD will enhance and easily fit in around other sports. A Dobok is part of the uniform

and can be purchased at any time of the training. It does help with the overall look and feel and authenticity of the martial art: the belt represents how many hours you have put in to your training. On average a student will train 1000 hours in total before going for a Black Belt. The dobok can cost as little as

“I joined TKD after a friend suggested it to me. She knew about the hard bullying I was getting at school, and how I was socially awkward. I wasn’t too sure about doing a sport like this, I had never heard of it before. I did some research and it looked complicated. After my first day I met loads of people from different countries. They showed me how to spar and self-defence, they helped me figure it out and it was nothing like Google had said. Young people like me teenagers, should do taekwondo you learn self- defence and have respect for your peers and can lose weight while having fun. Even if you think you won’t fit in, you will. Everyone is different and that is what tests you in this sport. You don’t have to know anything about it to join. It changed my life and it could change yours” Maddi, 13, Hastings.

13 $30.00 to $200.00 depends on what you are doing. It’s not all about the fighting there is Poomsae (a series of movements done with precise timing, technique & power) competition as well. Taekwondo is not funded so if you do want to compete and represent your country there is a lot of fundraising involved. Our club has had numerous national and international titles.

It’s a great way to meet likeminded people and make friends along the way. My son Robby Pruckmuller is competing in Canada in November along with the NZ Junior Team. We are always looking for a sponsor for these kids - one day Hastings will have its very first Taekwondo Olympian. For more information contact Camille Pruckmuller 0274297557 or just drop in to the Dojang.

cooters are becoming fashionable again, especially in the Bay, as they’re a great way of getting about town and are as cheap as chips to run. The cost of a new scooter, for example the Giorno by Honda costs $3200 with on road costs additional. Manager of Hastings Honda Grant Merwood says the scooter, being 49cc- under the 50cc threshold, can be driven by those who have a car learner driving licence. They are really very easy to ride and don’t have gears making it even easier to get from a to b. They’re light, easy to ride and it will only cost about $10 to fill a tank which will give 150-180km on one tank! They have a good ‘green footprint’ with low emissions, they’re quiet and then there’s the fuel efficiency. For such a petite machine it’s full of useful features such as weather shields to protect legs from bad weather, a lockable storage compartment, a bag hook and luggage shelf. Instruments are retro in style and include a fuel gauge. While in use the headlight is always on and there’s also a combined braking system, both great safety features.

Another advantage is that scooters do not need to have a warrant of fitness but must be to road legal standard. However, Grant recommends an annual service. The Giorno comes in several colours including Orange Blaze, Spica Pink for those who like to make a statement and Pearl Gemini Blue. Grant recommends wearing a full face helmet for safety. There are plenty of accessories for those who want to dress the part and be safe.

Needing sexual health advice and information?

H

ave you noticed lumps and bumps in places they shouldn’t be? Need more contraception or the emergency pill? Perhaps you’ve changed partners recently and started a new relationship. You can find support from one of the many sexual health services available in The Bay - from Central Hawke’s Bay in the south, to Napier and Hastings, and up to Wairoa in the north. If you’re aged 20 or under, you can go along to any general practice to see a nurse or doctor for sexual health checks, treatment, information and contraception. All of this is for free. Some of the practices even have late nights. Anyone aged 10 to 24 can also pop along to Directions Youth Health Centre in Hastings or Napier. Give them a call on 871 5307 to find out when they’re open. If you live in Wairoa you can go to general practices for free sexual health services up until you’re 25 (so you need to be 24 years and under). And if you’re still at school you can see your school health nurse – but remember, they’re not around during the holidays. And anyone of any age can visit the District Health Board’s sexual health clinics – at the Napier Health Centre

– Monday to Friday 8.30-4.30pm; or Hawke’s Bay Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital in Hastings. Be sure to ring the hospital first on 8788109 extension 4240, if you want to go to the Hastings clinic, as it is only a once a fortnight clinic. You can also text the sexual health clinic on 027 703 7391. All of these services offer a range of free tests and services, including pregnancy tests and condoms. They can also quickly and easily do checks for sexually transmitted infections - STIs. STI checks are simple, easy and painless. Nothing gets poked in awkward places. Sexual health nurses can even show you how to do them yourself. Make sure you stay safe and get checked. All of Hawke’s Bay’s sexual health services are confidential and private. Students Against Dangerous Driving

I

f you are aged 15-19 years in this country, you are more likely to do die in a road crash than by any other cause. Unfortunately NZ’s road toll, particularly amongst youth, and particularly in relation to alcohol, still trails most of the developed world and we are still seeing far too many crashes and resulting injuries, serious injuries and deaths for a country our size. The SADD programme has been a major contributor in communities across NZ in addressing the culture around drink driving, and in educating and empowering each new generation of young person to make healthier, safer and better choices. SADD was started in New Zealand in 1985 by a group of students at Mahurangi College in Warkworth. It was an entirely student made and led initiative, that communicated their unrest with the epidemic they were seeing - people, and young people in particular, were dying on our roads due to drink driving.

It was an ideal shared, for SADD groups began to pop up in other schools in the upper North Island including Wanganui where some Girls High School students started their own SADD group. It was in Wanganui that members of the NZ Automobile Association (AA) became aware of the student initiative, which eventually led to the AA supporting the set-up and roll-out of a nationwide campaign for schools and students in 1988 - and the SADD programme was born. In May 2014, the organisation’s name changed from ‹Students Against Driving Drunk› to ‹Students Against Dangerous Driving›. This change recognised that although the rate of alcohol related fatal crashes was 70% lower than in 1985, teen drivers still have a road death rate nearly double the rest of the population and requiring SADD to begin targeting other risks as well as impaired driving. Young people today still want to be part of creating the positive change we need to see in our world, and the time has

come to challenge ourselves to addressing young driver safety in general, where our mission becomes one of reducing the youth road toll, from all causes

and in its entirety, with the vision of stopping the biggest killer of kiwi teens: road crashes. Courtesy SADD http://www.sadd.org.nz/

Getting your licence

T

here are three stages to getting a car licence. At each stage you earn a new licence with fewer restrictions and more responsibilities.

Your learner licence will be issued for five years.

Stage 1: Learner licence

To apply for your restricted licence you must: • Be at least 16 ½ years old. • Have held your learner licence for at least six months. • You can apply for this licence after six months on your learner licence. To progress to this step, you’ll have to pass a practical test of your driving skills.

You must be at least 16 before you can apply for your learner licence. You have to pass a road rules theory test to get this licence. While on a learner licence • You must only drive with a supervisor beside you at all times. Your supervisor must hold a full NZ car licence which does not have a supervisor condition. They must have held their licence for at least two years. • Your car must display L plates front and back. • You may carry passengers but your supervisor must agree to this. • You save severe penalties if you drive outside the licence conditions.

Stage 2: Restricted licence

While on a restricted licence: • You can drive on your own but not between 10pm and 5am. • Generally you cannot carry passengers without the supervision of a licenced car driver. Your restricted licence will be issued for five years.

Stage 3: Full licence

You must be at least 18 before you can apply for your full licence. If you have completed an approved

advance driving course this is reduced to 17 ½. If you are under 25 you can apply after you’ve held your restricted licence for at least 18 months, or at least 12 months if you have completed an approved advanced driving skills course. If you are 25 or older you can apply after you have held your restricted licence for at least

six months or at least three months if you have completed approved advanced driving skills course. To progress to a full licence you have to pass a practical test by demonstrating safe driving r across a wide range of traffic situations and road conditions. Thanks to VTNZ, JETMag and Miah Kennett.

Cyberbullying advice for young people

C

yberbullying is bullying. It’s using any device on the internet, like a mobile phone or a camera to hurt somebody or embarrass them. Bullying on the internet or mobiles can include many things, like being sent anonymous text messages to your phone, posting nasty or threatening comments on your Facebook or Instagram page or sending mean or embarrassing photos or videos of you to other people. Cyberbullying can involve people spreading rumours about you and scaring you. Sometimes people may try to stop you from communicating with others or they may hack and steal passwords for your online accounts. Cyberbullying takes many forms and some of these may be harder to deal with than others. Depending on the situation, some young people are able to sort it out quickly, or simply shrug it off. About 1 in 5 New Zealand high school students say they have been cyberbullied

and many say it makes them feel scared, depressed, angry or ashamed. Posting mean or nasty pictures or videos of people or altered pictures online can embarrass them in front of their school and spread quickly out of control. If you post pictures online these can exist long after you delete them

They will want to help you stop the bullying quickly and safely. If the bullying online or on your mobile involves physical threats, like threats to hurt or fight you, contact

Plan your career with Careers New Zealand I’m not sure what I want to do? Where to start

Who am I?

Your first step is to understand who you are and what you want both from your work and your life. Consider your interests, skills, values and qualities. Ask yourself: What am I good at? What do I like to do in my spare time? What have I achieved already? What things am I passionate about? Use the online quizzes and tools on the Careers New Zealand web site to help get started. They’ll help you to understand what’s important to you, and give you some ideas for where your career should head next. You don’t have to do all the activities, just those that seem most useful to you now. You can print off your answers, or save most of your results and information on the website.

Review your interests Looking at the broad areas of work that interest you is an important first step when planning your career or thinking of making changes to it. Take these interests into account when considering jobs or study. If you are able to find an environment that suits your interests, you are likely to be happier in what you do.

Review your values

Your personal values can play a part in your career decisions. Knowing what is important to you in a job can narrow down your career options. Finding a career that fits with your values can help you feel more satisfied in your work.

Review your skills

Working out what skills you have, then matching them to different jobs, can open up career options you may never have thought of. Think of broad areas of skills, and what level of skill you have in each area. Then try to think of examples of how you have used those skills at work, or in some other area of your life.

Where am I?

The people around you and your personal circumstances also play a part in your career choices. Things to consider include: Family expectations - perhaps your parents or wh–anau have a strong opinion about what career you should pursue, or want you to follow a course that they think will make you the best person you can be. Your commitments outside work - this could include anything from sporting or community group activities that mean you have to be free at certain times. Where you are in your career journey - if you’re just starting out, you may be willing to spend more time and effort on training or studying.

23 Obstacles or challenges you might face - these may be big or small.

Where do I want to be?

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time, and beyond? What do you want to be doing, and what do you want to be like as a person? Knowing this can affect your choices, for example: Do you want a job that earns you a lot of money? Do you want a job that will allow you a certain amount of free time, so you can continue to take part in other activities? Do you like being in charge, giving advice, or having people come to you for help? Thinking about the type of thing that you want to be doing will help you with your career ideas. Also thinking about how you will get there, what’s involved in getting there, and then taking the necessary steps to achieve your goal. Do you have the drive to devote yourself to a long training period? Can you afford to not be working while you study toward your goal? Can you put in the long hours needed to be successful in certain types of jobs?

Where can I go for help?

Once you’ve explored your own ideas about yourself, and narrowed down some career options, it’s good to talk through your thoughts with others. Bouncing your ideas off someone else can help things become clearer to you.

Talk to people who know you well

If you have a part-time job, or if you do volunteer work, think about asking your employer about what you do well These people may even have career suggestions based on what they know of you. Remember, you can revisit these steps at any time, as no career decision you make is ever permanent. You’ll always have options, and as your life changes you may find that what you want from your career changes too. Find out more and complete the exercises at the Careers New Zealand website: www.careers.govt.nz Courtesy Careers New Zealand

Thinking about further study?

Students planning to continue study after they leave school have a lot of choices to make. Sussed Online will get you on your way. Will it be broadband and baked beans, or dial-up and dining out? Part-time job or parents helping? Hear from students about their experiences and the choices you will need to make. You’ll also learn more about StudyLink and what we do along the way. http://www.studylink.govt.nz/tools-and-calculators/sussed/index.html
