Legal guidance only a phone call away

By Jeremy Blandford

Whenever Federated Farmers members have a legal issue they know they have a valuable and often free solution by dialling 0800 327 646.

The 0800 helpline provides members with a quick and easy way to get general advice on legal issues that arise on farms.

This call may not solve the problem, but it will givesome options on achieving a solution before the issue escalates.

To achieve the best results for members, Federated Farmers has a partnership with respected, nationwide law firm DLA Phillips Fox.

In the past year there were over 20,000 calls to the 0800 FARMING line, with a reasonable proportion of legal issues on a wide range of queries which kept the firm's commercial and employment teams busy.

As well as more common queries such as employment, fencing, transport, sharemilking and property issues, more unusual matters have included drug abuse, internet fraud, finding weapons on farms and injuries. One caller got help in dealing with Nigerian scam.

Although the service is confined to a telephone conversation, the majority of the callers only require a helping hand on their next course of action.

Farmers who have used the 0800 line have appreciated the service, which they find an inexpensive alternative to engaging local solicitors on issues that may not need legal representation.

Our lawyers understand many farmers provide more than just a job, senior employment lawyer Frances Lear said.

"They provide a house, food and support to the people living and working on their farm.

"We understand people's differing needs and how important it is to set up good employment and tenancy arrangements at the start."

Join Federated Farmers now and take advantage of experienced sound legal advice from a team that understands the rural environment. Call 0800 327646.
