A new initiative is encouraging young cyclists to boost their visibility, particularly over winter.
'Be smart. Be seen.' aims to raise community awareness of youth cyclists and will focus on intermediate and high school students who cycle on busy urban roads during peak traffic times between 8-9am and 3-4pm.
Senior Constable Jolanda Roe said youth are often over-looked when it comes to youth cycle safety.
"We try to make sure all these kids that do cycle in winter are safe."
The initiative provides education to cyclists, ensures schools' policies are considered and builds on school-community partnerships. Community Constable Niwha Jones said the campaign isn't a one-off event, but provides an on-going programme over two school terms.
Hundreds of hi-vis backpack covers and wristbands far have been supplied by Hamilton City Council's road safety department and given out by Police to student cyclists, as well as scooter riders and pedestrians who use high traffic areas.
Ms Roe said without the support from council the campaign wouldn't be possible. Students can also win helmets, tyre checkers, bike pumps, and treats.
Mr Jones said the initiative was originally run alongside the Police and BikeWise national campaign 'Be Bright', but with a focus on youth cyclists aged 10- 17 and involved education, community engagement and raising public awareness.
"Youth cyclists using urban roads during times of high volume traffic are at increased risk of injury or fatality during low-light winter conditions," said Mr Jones. "Cyclists can increase their visibility through wearing bright clothing and using bike lights."
He said the increased visibility also raises driver and community awareness of youth cyclists.
