An urban and contemporary version of Jesus Christ Superstar comes to Hamilton.
In the production, one of the world's most famous rock operas is set in harsh, unforgiving, industrial reality.
The story of Jesus of Nazareth is known by most, but Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical adaptation shows the human side of a man many believe to be the son of God, the fickle nature of those who worshiped him, the woman who loved him and the man who would ultimately betray him.
The show opens tomorrow and will play on selected dates until September 21.
Nick Wilkinson's innovative direction, Joel Benjamin Hewlett's urban-inspired choreography and Malcolm Barr's musical direction make for the perfect team in producing a modern retelling, set in a capitalist metropolis where the weak and vulnerable constantly look for a way out of an endless cycle of poverty and injustice.
The roller-coaster production features spectacular numbers (Simon Zealotes, Superstar) and showcases amazing talent, leaving the audience amazed, while intimate moments (I Don't Know How To Love Him, Judas' Death) will have people drawn into the emotional torment of the characters.
With all the talk of the future of The Meteor after the venue joined Clarence Street Theatre on the Hamilton City Council's potential asset sales list, along comes Fullhouse Productions pushing the limits of the venue and showing what can be done in the space by staging a well-loved main-stream rock opera.
Director Nick Wilkinson says his vision is to have the show set in an unrelentingly harsh urban environment. The characters and numbers performed adapt well to this vision.
"I've given Jesus Christ Superstar a facelift and introduced it to 2013."
Key cast members are Matt Powell (Jesus), Joel Benjamin Hewlett (Judas) and Bryan Bevege (Pilate). There is a total cast of 41, plus 36 from the band, production team and crew.
