A Night with Legends function at Sky City Hamilton on Thursday will launch the Waikato Rugby Union Hall of Fame.
The event will feature British and Irish Lions coach and Waikato centurion Warren Gatland as guest speaker.
The initial unveiling of the Hall of Fame will see players inducted from the 1921-1969 era. During this era 25 players played more than 50 games for Waikato. A selection criteria will be decided for this and future inductees into the Hall of Fame.
Waikato Rugby Union chief executive Graham Bowen says the union has been thinking about launching a Hall of Fame for several years and is excited to be able to get it off the ground.
"Waikato is a province steeped in history with many proud moments over 92 years, and this is a great way of recognising some of the memorable names which have made this union the great organisation it is."
This first event will see a diverse range of Waikato players from the union's beginning in 1921 through to 1969. The plan is to hold a function for each decade every year - with the players of the 1970s set to be celebrated in 2014.
It is also fitting Waikato legend and now one of the world's most renowned rugby coaches, Warren Gatland, will help with the launch.
Tables for the evening are being sold for $1200 for a table of 10.
