The smell of cooked food, coffee, the taste of fresh fruit and greens, the sound of local talent in the street, the crafts and general goods for sale, and the relaxed friendly faces of the crowds makes Frankton Market a popular destination on Saturday mornings.
Started in 1987 by prominent local businessmen Ivan Forlong and Bill Lee, the market is now in its 25th year. This will be celebrated on Saturday, December 8, with the unveiling of a plaque in honour of the two men. Other activities are planned and will be advertised closer to the date.
To meet legislative requirements, Frankton Market has been functioning with the road open between February to September this year. Commerce St (between Lake Rd and Kent St) is now closed again, thus recreating the market's vibrant atmosphere.
The section of Commerce St will stay closed each Saturday until April 20 and then the west end (from Kent St to High St) will be closed until September 14, 2013.
This appears complicated but in practice is simple and safe thanks to the professional traffic management in place on Saturday mornings.
Tell your family and friends during the week, "See you at the market."
It's a great place to meet.
