David John Daglish of Ashburton died in a head-on crash between two cars about 6pm on Sunday, west of Jackson's Hotel.
Mr Daglish was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle. He died at the scene.
The driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries and a passenger in the same vehicle was flown to Greymouth Hospital with leg injuries.
A Greymouth police spokesman said the serious crash unit was investigating the cause of the crash.
The incident was one of two fatal crashes over the weekend.
A 22-year-old man died when an all terrain vehicle rolled on top of him in Hawkes Bay on Friday night.
Emergency services were called to the crash on Pohokura Rd, near Tutira, north of Napier, about 8.50pm.
