The first trailer for the film adaptation of Assassin's Creed has landed.
Hewing close to the visual style of the video games upon which it is based, the film appears to contain significant quantities of free-running and melee combat in a historical Spanish setting.
The science-fiction conceit of the Animus memory device is retained, though it is depicted in a more dynamic and visual way than the game's simple futuristic recliner.
Star and producer Michael Fassbender told Gamespot that when it comes to video game adaptations, "somebody has got to do it right once."
Australian director Justin Kurzel, however, noted that it was "a really big challenge" making the film, "having to invent a story to take all those different elements of the game and also stay faithful to what fans expect."
"I respect the game and have spent a lot of time with the game but at a certain point you have to start looking at this as a film and how it works as one."
Kurzel and Fassbender previously worked together on a well-regarded screen production of Shakespeare's Macbeth, which premiered in competition at the Cannes film festival last year.
Assassin's Creed has become of the biggest video game franchises in the world, selling over 90 million units since the first game's launch in 2007.
The film releases on December 21st.
