Ashley Pitman is hoping his spectacular 13-curl beard will put him on the world map. The hairy Auckland film-maker, left, will put his best chin forward at the New Zealand Beard and Moustache Competition on Friday.
The wacky event is a warm-up for his appearance in the "beard freestyle" category at the World Beard and Moustache Championships in Austria in October.
His secret weapon is a beard with five curls down each side and three big ones in the middle.
"I have put a lot of effort into this. Tongs, curlers, special shampoos, conditioners, the lot," he said.
The 24-year-old has also spent more than $200 on oils, products and a personal stylist in the run-up to the New Zealand beard champs, to be held at Auckland's King's Arms Tavern.
"I don't wear my beard like this every day because I would have to get up too early to get ready."
More than 300 fans are expected to watch about 50 men show off their facial creations. Money raised will go to the Child Cancer Foundation.
Organiser Ygnacio Cervio now wants to bring the world champs to New Zealand. He finished fifth in the "best full beard and styled moustache" section in Germany in 2013.
