PRAGUE (AP) A Czech official says the Social Democratic party's leader will be appointed the country's new prime minister in the coming days.
Bohuslav Sobotka will be appointed next week and his government by the end of January, presidential spokesman Jiri Ovcacek says. In the Czech Republic, the president appoints the government at the prime minister's request.
Thursday's announcement comes just days after the left-wing Social Democrats signed a deal with two other parties to form a new center-left coalition government. The left-wing Social Democrats finished first in October's parliamentary election.
The deal, signed by Sobotka on Monday with the centrist ANO (Yes) movement led by billionaire businessman Andrej Babis and the centrist Christian Democrats, was a major step toward ending a political crisis triggered by the center-right government's collapse in June.
