An Upper Hutt police constable has received a bronze merit award for courage after capturing a burglar while off duty.
The award, announced in the internal police magazine Ten-One, came after Constable Nicholas Brown and his police dog chased the burglar when he was seen leaving a property last year. The man hit the dog with his shoe and ran off. He was again stopped by the dog and Constable Brown managed to hold him as he tried to stab the constable with a pair of garden shears.
