LOS ANGELES - The Robert De Niro comedy Meet the Parents fended off four new releases to hold the No 1 position at North American box offices for the second consecutive weekend.
According to studio estimates, Meet the Parents grossed about $US21.3 ($NZ54.2) million, taking its 10-day total to $US59 million. The Denzel Washington football drama Remember the Titans stayed at No 2 with $US13.5 million. After 17 days, it has raked in $US64.7 million.
The Winona Ryder satanic thriller Lost Souls was the best of the rookies, opening at No 3 with a modest $US8.4 million. Newcomers rounded out the top five. The Ladies Man, a raunchy comedy based on a Saturday Night Live skit, grossed $US5.7 million. The Contender, a political thriller starring Gary Oldman and Joan Allen, took in $US5.5 million.
Bowing in at No 7 was director Robert Altman's Dr T & the Women, an ensemble comedy starring Richard Gere as a Dallas gynaecologist. It pulled in $US5.2 million.
In its third weekend of release, actor/writer/director Christopher Guest's canine satire Best in Show finally landed a top-10 berth, jumping four places to No 9 with $US2.4 million. It has grossed $US4.1 million to date.
