A Goldie painting sold for a record auction price of $230,000 in Auckland last night.
Auctioneer Peter Webb said the 1909 oil painting by Charles Frederick Goldie, A Portrait of Anahe te Rahui, famed Maori carver from Rotorua, was sold to a local businessman who wished to remain anonymous.
The 76cm by 63.5cm painting sold in 1969 for just $5650.
Mr Webb said last night's price was a record for a Goldie at auction but not the top price for the artist.
Te Papa museum in Wellington had bought two large Goldies about four times the size of Anahe te Rahui for $450,000 each.
