The Director of the Auckland museum is extending heartfelt thanks to the businessman who returned a stolen Goldie painting to police.
The oil painting of Maori elder Hera Puna was taken from the museum on Monday.
Police said a man, who wants to remain anonymous, bought the painting for $10,000 and last night turned it in to police.
Musuem Director Dr Rodney WiIson said the painting is only slightly damaged and he is hugely relieved to have it back.
He said the way it was recovered was a total surprise.
