LONDON - The closure of London's "bouncing bridge" is the latest in a string of millennium embarrassments for the English capital.
The 320m-long footbridge across the Thames linking St Paul's Cathedral with the new Tate Modern art gallery was opened at the weekend and closed within 48 hours because it swayed too much. It has since emerged that it will be closed for weeks. About 150,000 people had crossed on the first day.
It is the latest millennium "curse" on London's tourism reputation. The sterling 758 million Dome has been an absolute flop, suffering a cash and visitor crisis. London's "River of Fire" billed as the greatest ever fireworks spectacle fizzled into a damp squib on New Year's Eve.
