On My Block is a classic, all-American coming-of-age story, but this time features people of colour. It borrows from much-loved features like Sixteen Candles and The Goonies, while flipping the genre on its head as four young teens navigate high school, puberty, sex and parties ... as well as gang life, street violence and racism. As such, it gives a nod to John Hughes and 80s nostalgia, with shockingly harsh reminders that "only white kids find treasure". It shows that people of colour live shared experiences, but they also have separate experiences that cannot be discounted. That, and it's just fun and compelling to watch.

A Smile in the Middle of the Way was first presented in Mexico in 2002 and has since made its way around the world to us. The exhibition was organised by the Mexican Embassy for New Zealand and Besos Latinos Restaurant and it's on now but finishing up this month, so now's the time to get down to Elliott Stables and check it out. Entry is free.

By now you'll have heard of the new Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, because it's been making headlines all over the place, simply because David Letterman is having the chats we all wish we could have. In My Next Guest he has an hour-long on-stage conversation with some major names; he asks Barack Obama about life after the White House, quizzes Malala Yousefsai on everything from her brutal attack to which rapper she likes best and broaches the subject of cheating with Jay-Z. And still to come is Tina Fey and reportedly, Howard Stern. It's an interesting watch, available on Netflix now.
