Former Headless Chickens member Grant Fell has passed away.

Fell had fought a two-year battle with cancer and earlier this week went into hospice care.

Fell was a member of legendary Flying Nun band Headless Chickens who had a string of hits and successful records in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Tributes tonight flowed from those who were close to him, including former Headless Chickens frontman Chris Matthews.

"Hey everyone ... just wanted to tell you that Grant Fell died about three hours ago at Mercy Hospice," he wrote. "Don't know what else to say right now."

Fell leaves behind his beloved wife Rachael Churchward. The pair were pioneers in the New Zealand fashion scene and co-founded Black magazine together.
