On her breakthrough single Royals Lorde said she'd never seen a "diamond in the flesh". Now, four years on, that very song has been certified diamond after selling 10 million copies in the US.
The single, which hit the no.1 spot in our charts in 2013, is just one of 16 songs in US history to hit the diamond milestone.
Lorde originally released Royals as a free download when she was still an unknown artist. The song quickly took off turning the then Devonport teenager into a household name, first here and then around the world. It shot her to superstardom and sent her debut album, Pure Heroine, to the top of charts.
After a long gestation Lorde released her second album Melodrama earlier this year.
The record featured the no.1 single Green Light, received near unanimous critical acclaim - including a 5 star review in the Herald's entertainment magazine TimeOut - and is featuring in the business end of many Best of 2017 album lists.
It also won Lorde six Tuis at the recent NZ New Zealand Music Awards, as well as the APRA Silver Scroll award.
Other songs that went diamond this year include Katy Perry's Roar and Ed Sheeran's Thinking Out Loud.
