After seven seasons of faking it, Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke has finally undergone a real Khaleesi transformation.

The actress has been famously sporting a platinum wig to film scenes as Daenarys Targaryen to cover up her naturally dark hair for years, but has committed to dying her hair blonde ahead of filming for the HBO show's eighth and final season.

Clarke shared a photo from the hairstylist's chair on the set - you can see the pic of the Hound, Sandor Clegane, just over her right shoulder - to show off her "Mother of Dragons" makeover.

In the caption, she thanked the Thrones "genius" hairstylists for her new look, as well as creating the "Khaleesi wig".

Despite starring in one of the most popular television series of all time, Clarke has long laughed off the fact that she's fairly unrecognisable in real life, thanks to her character's wig.

In 2013, she told GQ magazine: "I'm so immediately unrecognisable. It takes a diehard fan to actually spot me. These HBO events, where I'll be talking to someone for a fair amount of time, and then suddenly they're like, 'Oh sh**! That's what you do!'

"They think I'm some crazy Brit who snuck her way into a Hollywood party."

And her hair is clearly something she's been looking to change for some time.

"It's silly to say, but when I take the wig off at the end of the day, I'm rather disappointed when I look in the mirror," she admitted to the publication.

Any hope of going incognito is likely to be over now, thanks to the new 'do - although it's certain to be some time before we see it on the small screen.

Production for Game of Thrones season eight is reportedly scheduled to begin in October, with the possibility the show won't return until late 2018 or even early 2019.
