I felt a rush of excitement when I stumbled across Gun by Chvrches in 2013 — the song captured me and I listened to it on repeat along with other teaser singles, Recover and The Mother We Share months before the release of the band's debut album The Bones Of What You Believe.
Now, the Scottish electronic trio are amping up for the September release of their sophomore album Every Open Eye.
This time around, it's their single Never Ending Circles that has grabbed my attention and I'm counting down the days to when I'll hear the rest of their album.
The song punches hard with electro synthpop over a thumping bass and the occasional "Ahh" from singer Lauren Mayberry, in her signature pixie-pitched voice.
The lyrics are placed in a playful rhythmic format, with the same poetic calibre as previous work: "Throw me/ No more bones and I will tell you no lies/ This time/ At least I am not/ So cold/ You give me everything I never deserved/ This time/ You know I'll leave".
Delicate keys that flow over the chorus give a feeling a magic — layering has always been the band's strong suit.
Chvrches have always sat in the alternative sphere — a little lighter than acts like Purity Ring, but less prescribed than MO or Charlie XCX — but they definitely have mainstream appeal.
I'd love to hear Never Ending Circles blasting through the radio airwaves. Not only does it have a great hook and vibe, but it's just different enough to make it stand out from everything else that's out there at the moment.
For now I'll be listening to Never Ending Circles on repeat while eagerly awaiting the album release, and keeping my fingers crossed that Chvrches decide to make a trip to perform their new music live in New Zealand this summer.
