It takes more than a quick pass under the scanner to spot the genetically modified food in your shopping trolley.
With that in mind, the Sydney Morning Herald put a basket of everyday groceries under scrutiny - with surprising results.
Australian manufacturers were asked if any ingredients in these products - also sold in New Zealand - came from genetically modified crops.
When the results were published in Australia, sweetmaker Mars quickly issued a statement telling consumers its new policy of using only GM-free ingredients.
The following list is based on the Herald survey, but names foods available in NZ that manufacturers said did or might contain GM ingredients.
