The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been beaten out by Les Miserables and Life of Pi at the British Academy Film Awards.
Peter Jackson's epic failed to take home any Baftas despite being nominated in the make up and hair, sound and special visual effects categories.
Les Miserables took best make up and hair and sound, while Life of Pi took best special visual effects.
The loss does not bode well for The Hobbit's Oscar hopes.
It is nominated for best makeup and hairstyling, production design and visual effects at the February 24 awards ceremony.
