Joss Whedon has finished an outline of the plot for the sequel to his superhero ensemble film The Avengers.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director and writer revealed he had submitted the outline for the film with the working title of The Avengers 2 to producers.
The movie is due to be released in May 2015.
It is expected to be written and directed by Whedon.
Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and Chris Hemsworth are expected to reprise their roles as Iron Man, The Black Widow, Hawkeye, Hulk and Thor respectively.
The Avengers raked in $US1.5 billion at the box office, making it the biggest movie of 2012.
It was widely praised by critics, with Whedon winning plaudits for coherently blending the worlds of Marvel's iconic superheroes.
He is also signed on as producer for new TV series S.H.I.E.L.D, which tracks the spies and superhero hunters of the Marvel universe.
The series will be written by longtime Whedon collaborators including Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen (Doll House), and Jeffrey Bell (Angel), EW reports.
