The foxy ladies from Fountain Lakes have tarted it up for the paparazzi at the world premiere of the Kath & Kim movie in Melbourne.

Kath & Kimderella: The Movie premiered on Sunday night at Fountain Gate, the suburban shopping centre parodied in the TV comedy.

Kim (Gina Riley) paraded the red carpet in a lurid pink taffeta and sequin dress, lapping up the spotlight next to mum Kath (Jane Turner), who was decked out in an aqua pants suit with a silver sequined bow and hair glitter.

It's the first time Kath and Kim have made it to the silver screen. In the movie the pair find themselves living it up in Positano after Kath wins a trip to Italy.

Kim said she had to fight off the affections of many Italian men, "they're only human", but preferred the culture back home in the suburbs.

"I was happy to get back to Fountain Lakes because we've got a faux Colosseum, we've got a faux Leaning Tower of Pizza - that's actually our pizza shop - and you know the coffee's better at Croutons By The Bay."

Kath and husband Kel (Glenn Robbins) said the film was a documentary home movie dreamed up in the bedroom.

"It's a bit of a feel good Shire," said Kath on the red carpet.

The girls arrived at the premiere in a Hummer with Kel, Kim's husband Brett (Peter Rowsthorn) and her long-suffering friend Sharon (Magda Szubanski), who sparkled in a gold glitter tracksuit, netball skirt and bib.

"I'm so excited I've got a bit of a case of hives at the moment," Sharon said.

"I've had some anti-histamine and Kim gave me a champers in the Hummer, so hopefully it will all work out."

Also on the red carpet were Sharon's love interest Wayne (Shane Warne) and celebrity TV host Ruby Rose.
