"Did an extra-terrestrial craft really crash in the desert near Roswell in 1947?

"Has there been a government cover-up?

"Were there aliens on board? And if so, what were they wearing?"

What you have just finished reading are my opening lines in episode four of Leigh Hart's Mysterious Planet: The Roswell Incident!

A couple of weeks ago I shared notes from my Director's Diary for the Loch Ness Monster episode; today I have excerpts from Roswell.

Day one (morning)

We arrive at Roswell. It's hot! The annual UFO convention seems to be in full swing.

11:15am: Eager to do some background research I visit the local UFO museum, which is dedicated entirely to the "alleged" event.

11:16am: I am kicked out. Sinister forces are at work and it seems my credentials, or rather lack of them, have been passed on to the museum officials.

Unable to find out who may have been responsible, I become the victim of a cover-up. The parallels with the original alleged cover-up are all too obvious.

I suspect powerful movers and shakers in the Bigfoot community have had a part to play. Episode one took place at a Bigfoot conference in Ohio and it would be fair to say that we got off on the wrong foot.

"They" suspect my documentary is unlikely to toe the party line, so they attempt to limit my access to the museum. Fortunately for me, "the truth is out there", as there is another museum just up the road.

Day two

We drive to the desert to search for any tiny pieces of UFO wreckage that may have been overlooked in the original clean-up. We use hyper-powerful metal detectors and search a grid laid out at the supposed crash site.

Early on we detect a problem. The metal detectors are too powerful and are being set off by zippers, buttons and even the static electricity stored in our clothing.

By afternoon we have solved the problem by metal detecting naked.

Mid-afternoon, we discover one of the members of the team is wearing a "Prince Albert" stud; he must sit out the rest of the investigation.
