They may be weapon-laden killing machines, but the Transformers' artillery couldn't quite compete with some good old-fashioned magic at the box office this weekend, as Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince toppled the robots' record.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince took $2.405 million in its first four days, making it the second-highest grossing film of all time in New Zealand, behind Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. It was a closely fought race however, with Harry pipping Optimus Prime to the post by just $2000.
Last month, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen set the year's record with an opening weekend of $2.403 million. In comparison, last year's record-holder The Dark Knight took just $1.8 million in its opening weekend.
