Pregnant Foxy Brown sentenced to jail

NEW YORK - A New York judge has sent pregnant rapper Foxy Brown to jail, ruling that she violated the terms of her probation by hitting a woman with her BlackBerry.

Judge Melissa Jackson ordered Brown held in jail until her next hearing on September 7, at which time the judge could sentence her to up to a year in prison, said Jack Ryan, a spokesman for the New York City probation department.

Brown, 28, whose real name is Inga Marchand, told the court she was three months pregnant.

Last October, the hip-hop artist was sentenced to three years probation and anger management classes for assaulting two nail salon stylists over a US$20 manicure. Brown had argued self-defence.

Jackson handled Brown's case last year, when she also ordered Brown to undergo periodic drug testing, stay away from the manicurists for five years and get the court's approval before travelling.

Jackson found on Wednesday that Brown travelled without the court's permission and skipped anger management class.

Brown got into trouble again earlier this month when she was accused of bruising the eye and chipping the tooth of a Brooklyn woman with her Blackberry.

She was freed on US$5,000 bail.

Brown's 1999 album Chyna Doll opened at the top of the Billboard 200, the US pop chart encompassing all styles of music, becoming the first female rap artist to achieve that feat.
