TV3 hails game show revival

By Joanna Hunkin

TV3 is set to revive the popular 90s television genre - the game show.

The network has announced plans to produce a local series of the Australian game show Deal or No Deal, which will screen later this year.

Kelly Martin, Director Of Programming for TV3, said the move followed international trends.

"Game shows have had a resurgence in popularity in recent times around the world. We think its timely to screen Deal Or No Deal in New Zealand, as its been a huge success in overseas markets," said Ms Martin.

Prime TV currently screens the Australian version of the series daily at 5pm.

Since its inception in 2001, the series' format has been picked up by more than 35 countries around the world.

Game shows were a popular format throughout the early 90s in New Zealand, with local versions of Wheel of Fortune, Sale of the Century and Face the Music, screening daily.

A decline in ratings saw a noticeable absence of the genre throughout the late 90s and 2000s.

The local version of Deal or No Deal will be produced by Imagination Television Ltd and contestant applications are open now.
