Community Drumming Whanganui are playing to a new beat after calling in expert Jennifer Moss.
Moss was in Whanganui on Saturday teaching an African inspired drumming and dance workshop to the newly formed group.
Community Drumming Whanganui facilitator Jacqueline Brand-Holt said the group started in September following another workshop in Whanganui.
"There were a whole lot of people who just loved the drumming so we decided to form a group and meet regularly," she said.
"Every workshop we learn a new rhythm."
The group usually meets every second fortnight at the Ladies' Rest on St Hill St.
Moss, who is based in Palmerston North but teaches music all over the country said African drumming had many benefits.
"It's a very social activity, it's great for bringing people together.
"It's a very inspiring instrument to play. It's easy to make progress and it gives back to you very quickly."
And she hoped to be back to work with the Whanganui group.
"We absolutely talked about doing some workshops and some group lessons."
To reserve a drum at a Community Drumming Whanganui meeting costs between $5 and $10.
