Location: This five-star hotel, spread across two towers, opened in 2012 in Dubai's Business Bay, near Sheikh Zayed Rd. A 10-minute taxi ride, or 30 to 40-minute walk, will take you to the city's downtown area, where Dubai Mall and the Burj Khalifa are located. The Business Bay metro station is about 10 minutes away on foot.
Check-in experience: Friendly, although longer than expected as a result of some confusion over the booking. Not what you really need after a more than 16-hour non-stop Emirates flight from Auckland, but no biggie either.
Room: I was put up on the 27th floor of the B tower, which had floor-to-ceiling windows and a great view over the city to the Arabian Gulf. The 44sq m room was palatial, by my standards, with a super-comfortable king-size bed and plenty of good TV channels. Weirdly, the door through to the balcony was kept locked "for your safety". Why build them if they can't be used?
Bathroom: Bigger than some hotel rooms I've stayed in, with a bath and a separate shower. Piping the sound from the TV through, so you can keep listening to BBC news while in the shower was a nice touch.
Price: $336 a night, non-refundable, for a sea-view room in mid-May 2016, according to Hotels.com
What's so good about this place: I had no idea it was the world's tallest hotel, at over 355m, until I began writing this. The Vault bar, on the 71st and 72nd floors, is a great place to watch the sun set over the desert.
What's in the neighbourhood: Not much, to be honest. There's a lot of construction going on in the area. As mentioned earlier, downtown is only a short hop away in a taxi.
Wi-fi: This was one of my only gripes. You can access free wi-fi in public areas of the hotel. However, accessing the internet in your room costs about $24 for a 24-hour period. Shouldn't it be the other way around?
Food and drink: On site are 19 restaurants specialising in everything from French to Italian, Indian, Japanese and even Peruvian cuisine.
Exercise facilities: A big gym with a full range of equipment. The treadmills are located above an outdoor smoking area, so you can watch people puffing on cigarettes while running. There's also a great outdoor pool area.

Perfect for: Recuperating after the long flight from Auckland.
Would I return: Yes, for sure.
