A motorcyclist who led police on a chase in Wellington tonight is in custody after crashing into a police car while trying to flee officers.
The pursuit started after officers in the area spotted two motorcyclists speeding down Mulberry St, in Normandale in Lower Hutt, just after 8.30pm.
Officers attempted to pull them over, but both motorcyclists failed to stop.
"Police followed the fleeing drivers briefly before abandoning for safety reasons,'' a police statement said.
The motorcyclists were later seen on a street in the suburb of Maungaraki.
"One of the riders crashed into a police patrol car in an attempt to flee.
"The driver was uninjured in the crash and has been taken into custody,'' police said.
A witness said three police cars were involved in the pursuit.
The second motorcyclist remains at large and police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone who may know the whereabouts of the second driver to contact authorities.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
