Irreplaceable century-old vestments have been stolen from a Wellington church.
Police said several embroidered vestments were taken from a display cabinet at St Peter's Anglican Church on Willis St.
The vestments were more than 100 years old and had significant meaning to the central city church.
The church would very much like to see the items returned, police said.
The items were very distinctive and would be of little value to anyone outside the church, police said.
The stolen items are matched sets of burses, palls, manipules and veils in church 'season' colours - red, white, green and purple.
They are all heavily embroidered on silk damask.
Anyone with any information on the incident, or who knows of someone trying to sell similar items, is asked to contact Wellington police on (04) 381 2000.
