Police have finally left the scene of horror smash on the outskirts of Hamilton last night where four young people lost their lives.
The deceased are all thought to be in their late teens and 20s, police said.
Northern communications shift Inspector Ian Brooker said emergency services had re-opened Ohaupo Road after diversions were put in place overnight.
He said officers left the Waikato crash site around 5.30am.
The accident, which happened just before 10pm at the intersection of Ohaupo and Penniket Roads outside the city's airport, left a Nissan Skyline in half after a collision with a Toyota van.
Firefighters had to cut the dead and injured from the vehicles.
Police said the driver of the van was taken to Waikato Hospital with moderate injuries.
They said it was a tragic and distressing time for the families of the dead young people.
Drivers were urged to take care on the roads and drive to the conditions.
