A man in his 20s, charged with the murder of a Kaitaia man in the town on New Year's Eve, has appeared in court.
The man was granted interim name suppression when he appeared in the Whangarei District Court this morning.
He is charged with the murder of Lee Rata, 35, who was found badly injured in Bonnetts Rd, Kaitaia, about 11pm on New Year's Eve.
A passing police patrol was flagged down by a member of the public informing them of a badly injured man on the side of the road.

The accused man has been remanded in custody to appear in the High Court at Whangarei on February 4.
